During the dry spell from Derby to about a week ago, we were able to irrigate most of the rough and keep it from going completely dormant. This combined with the recent rainfalls has contributed to the rough literally exploding out of the ground. Actually, we are seeing a surge of growth throughout all areas of the golf course.
An example of our healthy rough!
We have benefited from the recent growth spurt in regards to the Western Amateur preparations. At this point, we are able to identify weak or thin areas that need additional TLC. We plan to overseed these areas and apply fertilizers to help achieve a uniform, dense sward of rough to help defend the course from the big hitters next year.
We hope today's rain soaks in quickly so we can get the mowers back in action. Until then, we recommend hitting it long and straight!
